Dunes Do Up

Sitting alongside the sand dunes of Waimairi Beach in Christchurch, this family home was calling for some tender love and care. The new owners of this 2000’s, plastered house (with flat roofs and parapets) wanted to re-vamp and inject new life into the building to create a modern beach-side home that the extended family and friends could enjoy for years to come.

What was the brief?

To modernise this house for the new homeowners to enjoy entertaining with their extended family and friends.

The main brief was to tidy up the exterior by way of re-roof, re-clad, new entry way, and re-configuration of the upper floor area for a more modern lifestyle.

What was the house like before?

The existing house was unique in design with a rotated upper floor plate which had many interesting angles and features.

Whilst it had been repaired after the Canterbury 2011 earthquakes, the new owners wanted to safeguard their new home for the next chapter of life by removing the flat roof, internal gutters, sloping glazed roofs, plastered parapets with timber brackets and mitigate any historic waterproofing issues. Re-clad and revitalize the exterior.

The location of the house with its continuous exposure to sea spray and the notorious Christchurch easterly coming off the ocean required careful consideration of the roof design and new materials selection for re-cladding the home.

What did we do?

We assisted the homeowners in complete design and documentation services. We began with a concept design of what the house could look like which was warmly received. The plans were progressed through to building consent approval.
